what is kat up to? (and why am i talking in 3rd person?)
school. lot's of it. gravity, 3rd dimension, 4th dimension, 11th dimension! (what the fuck is the 11th dimension?) , particle accelerators, lipid bilayers, lewis dot structures, iodine isotopes, open systems, closed systems, neuron cell structures, organic vs. inorganic compounds, conservation equations, epithelial & nerve cell tissues- and telling them apart under the microscope. that is what i am up to.
and getting excited for the new growing season. making lists and diagrams. maybe ordering some honey bees if i can find the $. also just had an awesome burrito. highlight of the day for sure.

They arent dying off, they just all vacation in my back yard, I swear to god I have the world's population of bees in my yard in the summer. Mean stingy wasp ones
nerd for sure. hahaa! and yes the bees need to be saved. from sarah's backyard and everywhere else. they are amazing.
That would be awesome if you got bees I have been thinking of doing the same. Except there have been some killer bee nests around here and I wouldn't want mine to be overthrown by them.

Man i want to live somewhere where i can have a garden SO BAD. It hurts kate...it really hurts.
My uncle woody used to have these GIANT bumble bees. He painted a little dot on their butts with different colored nail polish so he could tell them apart. They were his pets or something lol.
But yeah, isn't that weird that honey bees are dying off? I see them dead on the ground A LOT in CA. Crazy.

ten that is crazy that you are seeing so many dead bees. there are some killer parasites out there that are proving to be quite a challenge. wtf?
you should rent the NOVA documentary on honey bees. it's totally mind blowing. maybe you've seen it before?

kat i didnt know you were a fan. i literally dont know anyone who actually really likes the Mars Volat besides james and i.. maybe my friend Mike..def no girls. and ya, i see dead bees here all the time.. And ten, if you want to live somewhere you can have a garden, why dont u move out of the city? i thought you loved the city?
meg - well i have always been a big green thumb type person. I had a ton of plants in Boston but when i moved here i had to give them all away to skat and buck.
I have a small collection again but not enough!
I had a veggie garden in VT and loved it. But haven't had the space since.
And now that I'm practically a vegan, having organic vegetables in my back yard would be awesome.
I have talked about my struggle with city vs. country since i moved here. I love both for differnt reasons. Its not easy to have a design career when you live on a farm and its not easy to have a farm when you live in the city.
In Brookline/Boston I had way more green space surrounding me, so San Diego has even been a big jump into more of a city life.
Of course i would kill to have a beautiful garden to tend. But i would also love to be a successful print maker, a zoologist, a toy designer and a peace corp worker.
I have to pick and choose my battles one at a time. I will have a house with a yard and a garden one day. probably one day in the next 5 years.
But right now at this second, Chris and i are happy enough being able to be able to walk to Whole Foods...
For the offical rules go to www.wftda.com, but here is a quick and dirty:
There are always two teams on the track at once. Each team can have no more than five skaters on the track at one time.
Each team is made up of one pivot, three blockers, and one jammer.
The pivot is designated by a striped helmet cover, while the jammer is designated by a helmet cover with a large star on both sides. Blockers do not wear helmet covers.
A bout consists of three 20-minute periods. Each period is composed of an unlimited number of jams which can last up to 2 minutes. After each jam, the teams have 30 seconds to line up for the next jam. If a skater is not on the track when the whistle is blown, her team must skate short
One long whistle blast signals the beginning of a jam and for the pack to start skating.
Two short whistle blasts are blown to signal the jammer start.
Four whistle blasts signal the end of the jam, which can happen because the two minutes elapsed or because the lead jammer called off the jam.
So the girls line up and the whistle blows, the pack starts skating, then the whistle blows twice and the two jammers (one for each team)start off. They try to get thru the pack. The first jammer to get thru without getting any penalties (going out of bounds illegal hits) is the lead jammer and can call off the jam any time (ie if it looks like the other team is scoring more, etc). If there are penalties then there is no lead jammer and the jam lasts the full two minutes. After the first pass the jammers can then score points by lapping the pack. They get a point for each member of the opposing team they lap legally. So potentially 4 points each pass. The blockers assist their jammer by knocking down the blockers on the other team, giving whips and pushes to their jammer and stopping the jammer on the other team. Pivots control the pack speed and slow it down so its easier for their jammer to get thru, etc.
It is physical but its is highly strategic as well. I know this is long, and may seem a bit complicated but after you watch it some it makes more sense
Recap of positions:
Pivot - Skates in the very front of the pack, controls pack speed and serves as a last line of defense against the opposing jammer. Can become jammer IF jammer passes the helmet cover to her. (this is rarely used)
Blocker - One of three blockers on her team, works together with other blockers and her pivot to help her jammer through the pack while stopping the opposing jammer. This includes moving opposing blockers out of the way, assisting her jammer, and blocking the opposing jammer.
Jammer - Point scoring player. Starts 20 feet behind the rear of the pack at a dead start. She has to skate through the entire pack one time and lap the pack before she can begin to score points. She receives one point for each skater on the opposite team that she passes legally. Can strategically pass her helmet cover to her pivot if she gets stuck in the pack(this is rarely done)
You get called on penalties, like illegal hits and stuff, there are lots of little rules but this is the basic core of it
Ten, Don't you have a rooftop patio? You could plant some things that maybe you buy a lot of in planters.
yeah i have thought about it. But the amount of soil i would have to buy to fill the containers would be soooo expensive....
really? I though potting soil was cheap. I havent bought it in forever though
well say a large bag of soil is $10 - you would need at least 3 of them just to fill a tub deep enough for vegetable roots. And that would just be enough room for a type of veggie. then you would need to do another tub for tomatoes or whatever.
I mean I'm not an expert in roof gardening, but i can imagine that it would get pretty pricey.
And plus, we are moving anyway :)
Maybe you could expieriment with hydroponics so you wouldn't have to buy so much soil. I've seen these countertop herb garden things that don't use soil on the home and garden channel they seem pretty cool, they even showed people growing tomatoes in them.
