i feel like an old lady right now as i update you ladies (and gentlemen). sipping on a whiskey on ice washed down w/ a multi-vitamin.
yesterday i planted a vegetable garden. purple cauliflower, kale, brussell sprouts, lettuce, mint, flat-leaf parsley, chives, tomatos, beans, and cukes. all organic seedlings and mostly organic soil components. :)
watched the sox kick some ass today. totally rad. Hey Maggie, look for me next thursday when they play the mariners. I have a seat behind home plate! i am still scoring free tix thru old work connections. haha. sweet.

yeah it is exciting!! it's not like it can be certified since i don't know the orgins of ALL the dirt, but everything i mixed in and planted is organic AND local.

ya, james started one in our yard.. well, his yard.. i dont know all the details of whats in it, but i know there are tomatoes...wow, i suck.. i should start paying attention more
lol. tomatoes are so fucking good fresh picked out of a garden. They are really hard to keep bug free though...
tomato vines are my favorite smell in the world! jusat rub your fingers on the stalk... im tellin you!
there are many ways to keep bugs and unwanted animals off yr plants.
ten, you wont have to worry so much about the animals.
dont use chemicals. YOU CAN BUY LADY BUGS ( since they are not organic in the city)
go to yr local garden center. they are @ $7 for 1,500 ladybugs. put them in your refridgerator until your ready to use them. they sleep in the dark cold. when you want to put them out, let them out after you water your plants at dusk. ( never water yr plants in hot daylight; it burns them)
also lady bugs dont fly at night. if you let them out during the day, they will fly into your neigbors yard ;)
i usually let a little out at a time and keep the reat in the fridge. as long as they have something to feed on they ownt leave. ( they eat, mites, mealybugs, worm and scale)
if you have problems with bigger bugs you need praying mantids.
i fully belive in biodynamic farming and NOT CHEMICALS!
just plant your veggies and let some ladybirds loose on them and your all set!
you can also use other flowers to scare bugs away!
After the long diatribe I just made, there are reasons for having some flowers in and around your vegetable garden. Some flowers help keep bugs away. Marigolds and Petunias have long been known to keep BAD bugs away. Additionally, you have to know the good insects from the bad ones. A bad insect, in gardening terms, is one that will eat your crop or spread deseases. A good insect is one that eats the bad bugs, ie: praying matids and ladybugs! They'll eat a lot of the bad bugs and help keep your garden in good shape. Aphids can destroy just about any crop. Ladybugs love em'. They'll eat a ton of them in no time flat.
SO, my point is, you can always have a beautiful garden. rooftop, deep in the soil, or elevated (as i do cause southern soil i sandy)

That is really good useful info Em. you can also put some beer into a petri dish and it will attract slugs and they will get drunk and die. If some one looked in fridge and saw that you had some lady bugs in a bag they might think that you sprinkle them on your salad. then they'd be giving you some funny looks.
oh yah marigolds also work for keeping away moles and other underground rodents.
